The Pyramid Texts in context | Dr. Joanna Popielska - Grzybowska angol nyelvű előadása

The world’s oldest religious “book”, the so-called Pyramid Texts, are ancient Egyptian collection of religious formulae. They were firstw ritten on the walls of the pyramid of King Unis in the 24th century BC. They are not lacking in descriptions of Egyptian notions and concepts about the Universe and its creatures. The ancient authors by means of words delineated the terrestrial life and the hereafter, in particular, gods and goddesses, deities and the dangerous creatures that inhabit them. The attentive reader also discovers thoughtful linguistic and graphic treatments to construct a message with multiple meanings. The lecture will introduce the listeners to the world of Egyptian gods and kings as well as to the complexity of Egyptian beliefs. Step by step, we will follow the Pharaoh as he ascends to heaven to take his place among the Imperishable Stars. The Pyramid Texts will be approached from the perspective of ca. 30 years of study of their graphic record, language and cultural context. The lecture will be richly illustrated with quotations translated from the Egyptian original and photographs.
